What is tempazepam used for?
Temazepam is used to treat insomnia, or the inability to get a good nights sleep. They are used in the short term to help insomniacs get sufficient rest. In essence they are a kind of sleeping tablet.
How does temazepam work?
Temazepam works by depressing the central nervous system – in other words by slowing down the activity of the nerves in the brain. As such, it can help you fall asleep and stay asleep.
After you take temazepam you will start to feel sleepy. The effects can last for up to 8 hours enabling you to get a good rest.
Temazeapm can have other effects on some people. See the section on temazepam side effects below.
Are temazepam a narcotic?
A narcotic is defined as an opiate medication. Temazepam is not a narcotic. It is a benzodiazepine.
Why is temazepam a controlled drug?
Temazepam is regarded as a controlled sunstance because it is habit-forming. It is potentially addictive and is sometimes misused for recreation.
What are other names for temazepam?
Althouth temazepam is the name of the dug, it is marketed under a number of brand names including:
As a ‘street drug’ temazepam has been sold under a number of nicknames including:
- Edinburgh eccies
- king kong pills
- vitamin T
How much temazepam to take?
Take exactly the amount that your doctor prescribes you. Taking more could be dangerous since temazepam can act differently for different people, depending on your age, weight, other health conditions, other medications you take etc.
Doctors prescribe anything from 7.5 to 30 mg once per day, so that’s quite a range. What’s safe for one person may not be safe for another so do not try to guess a dosage for yourself. Check with a doctor.
Also, doctors usually only prescribe temazepam for 7-10 days use, since if you take it for any longer it becomes less effective and you’re more likely to become dependent on it.
When to take temazepam?
Usually you take temazepam once a day just before you go to bed. It’s important to only take it when you’re ready to go to sleep and will be able to stay in bed/at rest for at least 7-8 hours afterwards. If you have to wake up or get up sooner than that, you might find you have trouble with your memory or ability to think and be co-ordinated, due to temazepam still affecting you.
If you went to bed without taking it and can’t fall asleep, you can still take it, but only if you’re going to be able to stay in bed for a further 7-8 hours. Otherwise if you miss a dose just skip it and wait for your next one.
How long does it take for temazepam to take effect?
It takes half an hour to an hour usually for its immediate effects to be felt (effects peak at about 45 minutes to one hour after taking) – so you want to be in bed and ready to sleep! However, it can take up to a week or so for it to significantly improve your ability to sleep.
How long does temazepam last?
The effects of temazepam last for up to 8 hours, so only take it if you can stay in bed for up to 8 hours after taking it – see above, “When to take temazepam?”
Why is temazepam not working? What to do when temazepam stops working?
Temazepam can seem to stop working if you’re taking it for longer than a couple of weeks. This is because your body quickly gets used to temazepam and adapts to its effects (becomes “tolerant” to it). So then you need a higher dose to get the same effect. It can be unsafe to take higher doses though, and in any case the same thing will happen. This is why temazepam is generally used only as a short-term fix for insomnia.
If you find temazepam is not working or has stopped working, see your doctor. You may be able to take a different kind of medication or try other ways to sleep better which don’t involve drugs. Whatever you do, don’t stop taking temazepam suddenly, unless your doctor has told you to – see next question.
How to stop taking temazepam?
You need to withdraw from temazepam carefully and usually gradually. If you stop taking it suddenly you can get withdrawal symptoms, especially if you’ve been taking it for a long time or at higher doses (this is because your body gets used to it and reacts badly when it’s suddenly absent from your system). These include feeling depressed, having uncontrollable tremors, stomach and muscle cramps, vomiting, sweating, and even seizures. You might have more trouble sleeping than you were having before.
For this reason, you need to work out a withdrawal schedule with your doctor, whereby your dose is reduced gradually, to minimise the chance of unpleasant withdrawal symptoms.
Can I take temazepam with alcohol? cigarettes? food?
Don’t drink while you’re taking temazepam since it can make the effects and side effects much stronger, and this can be dangerous. You can quickly become dizzy, drowsy, confused and have trouble thinking and make judgements. You’re also more likely to overdose if you combine temazepam and booze, which can be fatal. (More on this below,”Are temazepam safe?”)
Also smoking (tobacco) can make temazepam less effective.
You can take temazepam with or without food and you don’t need to follow a special diet or anything.
Temazepam side effects and safety
Is temazepam safe?
Yes and no. Yes, if you are taking them because you were prescribed them by a doctor who knows your full medical history and current symptoms. No, if you are taking them in any other circumstances.
Other health conditions and temazepam
For a start, there are quite a few medical conditions which may mean that temazepam isn’t safe for you.
Make sure to tell your doctor if you have a history of any of the following:
- breathing troubles (even asthma),
- seizures, kidney disease,
- liver disease,
- mental illness including depression,
- thoughts of killing yourself,
- or if you’ve ever been a big drinker (of alcohol),
- used street drugs,
- or got addicted to prescription medications.
Temazepam and Age
Age is also a consideration since temazepam can be less safe and less effective for the elderly, who are more at risk of side effects. At the very least, you’ll probably need to take a lower dose if you’re in your 60s or over.
Other medications and temazepam
Another thing is that many medications can interact with temazepam potentially harmfully, so you need to check with your doctor about these before you start taking temazepam (or if you’re already taking temazepam, check before taking any new medications).
There are several other medications which should not be taken if you’re taking temazepam (and vice versa). There are also some medications which you may be able to take with temazepam but the doses of each will need to be adjusted.
One of the main dangers is taking medications which depress the central nervous system. This is what temazepam does so taking anything else which also does this can be very dangerous. Other benzodiazepines, opioid medications including many strong painkillers, are CNS depressants and so shouldn’t be taken at the same time.
US FDA warnings
The US FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has recently (31st August 2016) issued a notice that it will now be putting special warnings on all opioid and benzodiazepine medications regarding of the dangers of mixing them. However, the same goes for other sedatives, tranquilizers, and any other medicines which can have sedative effects, such as allergy medications – and alcohol.
Mixing temazepam with any of these medications can result in the following symptoms: unusual dizziness or lightheadedness, extreme sleepiness, slowed or difficult breathing, or unresponsiveness. If this starts happening to you or anyone else, get medical help immediately!
Best thing is to avoid mixing such medications altogether. So you should tell your doctor about ANY medicines you’re currently taking (prescription or over the counter meds) and about any herbal products or nutritional supplements you take since these can also interact with temazepam.

You have been warned!
Addictiveness of temazepam
The other potential danger of temazepam is that it can be addictive. More on this below.
Overdosing on temazepam
Don’t do this because it can be fatal, especially if you’ve been drinking too. Symptoms include extreme drowsiness, confusion, or loss of consciousness and coma. And death.
A list of temazepam side effects
One of temazepam’s main side effects is that it can make you drowsy, although this isn’t so much a side effect as a main effect, since temazepam’s main use is to treat insomnia!
You should be aware that you can still feel drowsy the morning after taking it, or any time the following day. Thes side effects include:
- feeling light-headed,
- and even vomit.
So you need to make sure that you’re not feeling any of these symptoms before you drive, use machinery, do anything else that requires you to be fully alert.
Another main danger is having an allergic reaction to temazepam. If you’re allergic to other benzodiazepine drugs then don’t take temazepam and check the ingredients to make sure the tablets don’t contain other things you’re allergic to. Otherwise, keep an eye out for the following symptoms of allergic reaction and get medical help immediately if they occur: swelling or itching of the face, throat, tongue, lips, or eyes, a rash or hives, difficulty breathing or swallowing.
A less common but very serious side effect is doing weird things while you’re asleep under the influence of temazepam and not remembering afterwards. People have been known to do things like getting up, making food, eating, making phone calls, driving (and occasionally running people over), having sex, and so on.
This is more common with drugs like Ambien (zolpidem) but can happen with temazepam too. Obviously this is extremely dangerous – to you and anyone you encounter – so be careful and see your doctor to change your medication if this happens to you!
Another thing to keep an eye out for is changes in your mental state or behaviour. These can be subtle and occur gradually so they can be hard to notice, and hard to distinguish from other mental or emotional changes which occur due to other health conditions or circumstances.
The best thing is to tell close friends and/or family that you’re starting to take temazepam and to watch out for any alterations in your behaviour. You or they should tell your doctor immediately if you or they notice any of the following:
- difficulty concentrating,
- memory problems,
- depression (new or worse),
- unusually outgoing behavior,
- hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that don’t exist),
- feeling as if you are outside your body,
- thinking about hurting or killing yourself,
- or any other strange thoughts, feelings or behaviours.
Some people, especially those who have had mental illness, experience paradoxical reactions (i.e., the opposite effects to temazepam’s usual effects). These include:
- having worse insomnia,
- rage or general aggressiveness.
There are also loads of other possible side effects.

Longer-term side effects of Temazepam
Medical research is also starting to show that there may be longer-term side effects of taking drugs like temazepam.
One Harvard study found that elderly people taking benzodiazepines like temazepam for insomnia had a greater risk of developing dementia.
These adverse effects become more likely the higher the dose you take and the longer you take it for.
If you stick to your prescribed dose and take temazepam only for a short time you’re less at risk of unpleasant or dangerous side effects.
Can I take temazepam when pregnant or breastfeeding?
Don’t take temazepam when you’re pregnant. It can cause birth defects and/or life-threatening withdrawal symptoms in your baby.
Also don’t take it when breastfeeding since it can get into your breast milk and can harm your child.
If you’re taking temazepam make sure you don’t get pregnant!
Why is temazepam addictive?
As described above, “Why is temazepam not working?”, your body gets used to temazepam quite quickly so that you need higher doses to get the same effects. This can happen after just a few days. Basically, your body comes to treat the presence of the drug as essential for normal functioning, and doesn’t work as well without it. You then suffer withdrawal effects if temazepam is not in your system. Now you’re physically dependent on the drug, it’s a short step to being addicted. Although if you take your prescribed dose and only take it for a short time, you’re unlikely to become addicted to it.
Temazepam compared to other drugs
Is temazepam the same as alprazolam (Xanax), clonazepam (Klonopin), diazepam (Valium), lorazepam (Ativan), oxazepam, or zolpidem (Ambien)?
Temazepam is similar to, but not the same as:
- alprazolam (Xanax),
- clonazepam (Klonopin),
- diazepam (Valium),
- lorazepam (Ativan),
- and oxazepam.
This is because these are all benzodiazepines so have similar properties and effects. They are not interchangeable however, and treat different things.
Temazepam has more sedative effects than other benzodiazepines but less anti-seizure or anti-anxiety effects.
As such, temazepam is the one most commonly used to treat insomnia though sometimes lorazepam (Ativan) usefully treats insomnia, especially if the insomnia is related to anxiety.
Ambien (zolpidem) is a different kind of drug – a “z-drug”, designed to mimic the effects of benzodiazepines but without being so addictive. As it turns out, z-drugs are as addictive as benzodiazepines, so no luck there. However, it is also used to treat insomnia.
Which is better – temazepam or Ambien (zolpidem) or Xanax (alprazolam)?
To some extent, this depends what symptoms you have. Temazepam and Ambien treat insomnia while Xanax mainly treats anxiety.
Ambien can be used for a few weeks longer than temazepam. However while it can help you fall asleep it’s not that good at keeping you asleep.
So if sleeping through the night is your problem then temazepam may be better.
Having said that, which of these drugs is safer or more effective for you also depends on many other factors. Factors such as other health conditions you have or medications you take which may make one of these drugs more suitable than another. As always, check with a doctor to figure this out.
Which is safer – temazepam or Ambien (zolpidem) or Valium (diazepam)?
Again, this depends on your personal situation – your symptoms, other health conditions you have, other medications you take.
For insomnia, temazepam may be safer than Ambien since it is a bit less likely to make you do bizarre things while you’re asleep (though it still may do that).
Valium doesn’t have these particular side effects but it isn’t very good for treating insomnia since it can disturb the quality of your sleep.
