So it’s not too much hassle, and easier than going out for a doctor’s appointment, then waiting around at the chemist to get your prescription.
How to Use Zovirax / Acyclovir / Aciclovir
Zovirax or Acyclovir suppresses the action of the Herpes Simplex virus, and although it can’t eliminate it entirely, it stops it from multiplying and gives your body time to heal the symptoms.
Basically, using Zovirax tablets can stop any symptoms from getting worse, until your body can heal itself properly.
So you’re best to start using Zovirax tablets / Acyclovir tablets as soon as you have signs of symptoms.
As to dosage, different pharmacies sell Acyclovir in 200mg, 400mg or 800mg doses. 200 or 400mg is used to treat outbreaks of genital herpes – according to several medical websites, you take 200mg 5 times a day for 5 days for recurring outbreaks (or for 10 days if it’s a first outbreak).
800mg is also used to treat outbreaks of shingles. If you’re taking Acyclovir regularly as a long-term treatment, then you’d take 200mg.
As I mentioned above, even if you want a smaller dose, you can get the best value by buying 800mg tablets and splitting them into two or four pieces to get 200mg or 400mg doses.
And if 200mg is enough, then why not go for that as taking the lowest dose possible is cheaper and presumably you have less chance of any side effects.
Some people do get some side effects so read the packaging carefully, to make sure you’re aware of what these might be, and be informed about any other medicines or medical conditions which might interact with Acyclovir.
